Fall and Halloween Decor 2018

 Hello All!

WAY too long, no talk! I have news on the home decor front; we've moved! Which means there is SO much exciting new-ness going on in my apartment right now! I loved the creative challenge of designing a new space. Picking new layouts, new furniture pieces, adapting to the quicks of a new space has been SO much fun creatively.

The fall and winter holidays are my favorite times to decorate, and decorating for these seasons in the new house has been so much fun. For Halloween in particular some of my old decorations didn't feel right in this new space, so it was fun to find a few new pieces to tie in with my favorites of the old.

My new apartment has a very neutral vibe, with creams, golds, and tan shades being the dominant colors. I've kept it feeling warm and not sterile by mixing LOTS of materials (linens, wickers, unfinished woods, painted woods, corn husk juju hats, ceramics, glass, ext!), and I wanted to do the same with my fall decor. Orange didn't feel right in the new space, so I kept it neutral but again added texture to keep it interesting.

For my dining table, I mixed textural wheat stalks with metallic lanterns, with mercury glass and natural pumpkins. I'm loving it! This is the first time in my life I've owned a full size dining table, and I'm loving the new challenge of decorating this space.

My favorite Halloween display is on the back of my new sofa-table! The table itself has the look of whitewashed wood, but I added even more texture with the black "spooky cloth." No oranges here though! I kept in neutral with my black candelabra and spider tealight candle holders. I'm loving decorating with a creepy-crawley theme this year!

Another new space I've been having fun decorating in the new apartment is this bench we have by our stairs. This space has texture on texture on texture! The bench itself is wood and linen, and I've added some more fabric element with the two pillows. This tray was such a find as it combines wood with linen and glass. I've topped it with a mercury glass gourd (a homegoods score this year!) and some more creepy-crawley spiders!

The creepy-crawley creatures that are gracing my living room this area are mice! I stuck a couple of handmade mice on my coffee table tray and a few wire mice on top of my tv table wooden pumpkin display. I added texture to the all-white pumpkin display by sticking some faux hydrangea stems among the pumpkins. I also added a neutral pop of color with the wood bud vases from Target's fall Hearth and Hand collection (which I was really loving this year, by the way!).

I got a little more playful with color on my bedroom vanity. My vanity is a mirrored surface. Because mirrored surfaces lean "glam," it easily accepted my glittery black cat decor which I paired with ceramic spell books from Target's dollar spot. So fun!

The rest of our bedroom fall decor stayed neutral, though. I added a trio of amber glass jars (another Hearth and Hand score) to my jewelry stand for a bit of fall color. I also put together a pumpkin tray display for my dresser. (I'm itching to switch out this old IKEA dresser, by the way, so look for that post another day!).

That about sums up my fall and Halloween decor this year! I hope you enjoyed this peek into my home! I want to blog more often, so look out for some fall/Thanksgiving recipes coming soon, along with Christmas decor posts not long behind!

With Love, Katie.

DIY Pottery Barn Inspired Halloween Crow Wreath

I love me some Pottery Barn. I've been on a real Pottery Barn kick recently, I think because I registered there for my wedding I got in the mood for their aesthetic recently. I've always coveted their Halloween items too, and I usually splurge on one or two each season!

This year they are selling this georgeous, rustic, simple bat wreath. I loved it the moment I saw it, but I also said to myself, I could make something even better. I love the look of the black bats arranged simply around a grapevine wreath, but in person I think the wreath lacks a bit of dimension; the bats sit very flat on the face of the wreath.

My version involves arranging feathered crows around the wreath. I love my version even more than Pottery Barn's because of the dimension the crows give to the wreath. Plus, it's a bit more realistic of a scene! You could definitely find crows perching on a bramble of branches on Halloween night!

I've made a few DIY wreaths in my day, and I have to say this is the easiest of all time! All it involves is purchasing your materials (very easy, I found them all at Michaels and they have these crows every year), and arranging your crows around the wreath. I used hot glue to permanently attach the crows in place, but if you prefer to have the option of removing the crows later, twist ties would work just as well.

Materials:

- 3 to 4 feathered crows. I found mine at Michaels for $6 on sale.
- 1 grapevine wreath. Mine is 18 inches. I got this for $2.50 at Michaels with a coupon.
- Hot glue or twist ties to secure crows to wreath.
- Pliers (optional)

Instructions:

- Arrange crows on wreath to your satisfaction. To make the crows each look a bit different, I recommend varying their posture, with some bending over, and some standing up tall.
- If your crows legs are wire, like mine were, using pliers to manipulate the wire to attach properly to the wreath can be helpful.
- Secure crows using either twisty ties or hot glue. Allow to dry.
- Display your gorgeous, spooky Halloween wreath! It's as easy as that!

The overall cost of my wreath was $20 for three crows and the grapevine wreath form. Not bad when you compare it to $60 full price for Pottery Barn's bat version! This is my type of DIY, super easy, which means super fun, and absolutely impossible to screw up while looking completely classy. It even beats the original in my book!

I hope you enjoyed this Halloween crow wreath tutorial! If you make this, it would totally make my year to see your version! Don't forget to subscribe to my newsletter and follow me on Bloglovin so you never miss an update!

Halloween Home Tour 2017

Halloween is my favorite holiday. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Christmas, but something about the time of year and all the fun activities (pumpkin picking! Haunted houses! Parties!) makes me truly love Halloween. It's my favorite season to decorate for because of the amount of creativity it affords. Do you want to set up a realistic scene? A grouping of Halloween chotchkes? Decorate in orange? In black and white? In purple and green? Glittery or Rustic? Macabre or more PG? Halloween has so many options, and anything goes!

I usually begin scheming my Halloween decor in August (yes, seriously!), but this year I didn't get started until a bit later because I was so preoccupied with incorporating wedding and honeymoon pieces into my decor. As a result, my decorations are a bit more minimal than previous years, but it's a look I'm really digging.

My usual m.o. for Halloween decor is sticking with decorations in black, white and shades of grey, and this year is no different! I love the clean look black and white gives and I think it helps Halloween items look more grown-up, distinctive and fit in more seamlessly with regular decor.
